Uno de los músculos involucrados en el uso del brazo es el levator scapulae, que va desde la punta superior del omóplato hasta las primeras 4 vertebras cervicales. O sea, compresión y tensión en el cuello o una posición de la cabeza hacia adelante para mirar una pantalla, por ejemplo, influye las posibilidades de movimiento que tiene el brazo. Y si los hombros están sostenidos hacia arriba habitualmente (por ejemplo tocando el violín o usando la bici) este músculo se puede acortar, restringiendo el movimiento del cuello y los brazos.
Probá un movimiento ahora para experimentar. Gira tu cabeza como para mirar hacia atrás de un hombro y después levanta el brazo del lado que estás mirando. Ahora probalo de nuevo recordando de tu columna cómo eje y tu cabeza apoyada arriba sin esfuerzo. Qué diferencia notás en la calidad del movimiento? Que diferencia hay en el rango de movimiento?
En la Técnica Alexander, nos interesa el uso global del cuerpo más que músculos específicos, pero me parece utíl ver este músculo llamado levator scapulae, que participa en los movimientos de girar la cabeza lateralmente, de alejar el mentón del pecho para mirar hacia arriba, de subir hombros y de llevar la oreja hacia el hombro del mismo lado, entre otros. Es un ejemplo muy claro de la conexión entre las posturas habituales del cuello y las posibilidades del movimiento a la hora de usar los brazos para tocar un instrumento, correr, nadar o usar una computadora, por ejemplo.
En el taller de Brazos y manos exploraremos un uso coordinado de los brazos y las manos en relación con todo el ser cuerpo-mente. Investigaremos su funcionalidad, las interferencias que hacemos con su movimiento y cómo permitir movimiento libre para la ejecución instrumental o de voz.
