Squatting continues to be a common form of sitting in many cultures, including many Asian cultures. In many countries, however, sedentary life since childhood leads us to lose the ability to squat comfortably and to become accustomed to slumping. When we try to squat, we react with tension and compression of joints. Muscles that have become habitually shortened protest.
It is possible to recover the ability to squat comfortably. We can re-educate ourselves to release habitual tension and harmful movement patterns for greater freedom of movement, coordination and balance without effort. When that happens, one of the fun things that happens is we become able to squat again.
