Cohesion Dance Project, Helena, MT

By learning to work with the body’s design, we can improve range of movement, flexibility and balance. In this super fun workshop, we will be exploring the curves of the spine and how they help us improve mobility. We will be using the principles of the Alexander Technique to optimize the use of the body for easy flexing, extending and spirals. With this holistic approach, you’ll learn how to use the primary and secondary curves to allow ease of movement and to prevent injury and strain. Mari gives hands-on guidance to incorporate these concepts in activity.

The Alexander Technique is a method used by performing artists around the world to improve performance by increasing mind-body awareness, improving posture and coordination, and reducing tension. This holistic approach offers a way to care for yourself in all your activities, so you will be able to apply what you learn to your work, sports and exercise, performance arts, rehabilitation, resting, and daily life. It is a way to unlearn harmful habits of posture, movement and thought that interfere with any activity. This re-education of the whole mind-body self opens the door to freer and easier movement, effortless upright posture and balance, improved clarity of thought and intention, and naturally overcoming pain, stiffness and stress.

Mari is a certified Alexander Technique instructor teaching in Montana half the year and in Argentina the other half of the year. Her Alexander Technique training includes training in developmental movement with Luc Vanier, Director of The School of Dance at the University of Utah and co-author of Dance and the Alexander Technique: Exploring the Missing Link. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCS8JGINrtg) Mari taught Brazilian dances for many years, and is also certified as an Art of Running instructor.

The workshop is 2:00 to 5:00 on Sunday, June 16 at Cohesion Center for Dance and the Arts. A minimum of 3 participants is needed. If there are fewer than 4 participants, the workshop will be 2 hours instead of 3.
